Cherry blossom hangs over the Meguro River in Nakameguro in Nakameguro on March 25, 2022, in Tokyo, Japan. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced restrictions for people unfurling picnic mats under sakura trees for Hanami (flower viewing) parties in some city parks during the cherry blossom season to prevent the spread of new coronavirus cases in the capital.

Tokyo’s famed cherry blossoms, or sakura, bloom every spring, attracting thousands of visitors from the city and all over the world. The fun usually starts around February or March, when visitors start flocking to the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden to see the beautiful, pink-tinged trees. But, this spring, one park in northwest Tokyo has decided to ban all Hanami parties or picnics under the trees, citing safety concerns.
